These are some of the ideas that came out of my early exploration of the high-tech world.
After the first tutorial with Jo, I established the general research direction and began to explore the high-tech field. For the high-tech field, I first think of all kinds of science-fiction movies, games, novels and other works. And the most direct embodiment of high technology in my opinion is space flight and interstellar exploration. So I referenced a lot from such films, games and novels, such as Star Trek, Interstellar and so on.
The two pictures above are the first steps I tried to take. I create an interesting worldview by drawing the moments of landing and takeoff of a spaceship: the story of a spaceship arriving on an unknown planet. I was greatly inspired by the works of the artist Vladimir manyukhin. I was fascinated by his unrestrained imagination and powerful expression techniques.
After I finished reading the book Will AI Replace Us, I was inspired by a somewhat scary assumption in the book: that when AI becomes almost identical to humans, humans and AI will not coexist harmoniously. You won't be able to tell if you're standing in front of a human or an AI. And the consequences of this mutual suspicion are serious. So I came up with the idea of expressing this feeling through painting. In order to show the terrible and desperate atmosphere, I chose large areas of black and red as the main colors. In order to make the picture more expressive, I also chose to add more different colors of small areas. Finally, I chose purple to highlight the weird and uncanny feeling, not just the bloody feeling. The two similar colors also represent humans and AI itself.
After establishing the second research direction, namely gamification, I created the above two works. In terms of style, the reason why I try to follow the previous one is that I think this painting style can be well combined with the print media, and this view has been verified later. On the left, I want to use the image of the Internet addict to arouse people's thinking about the influence of game thinking on real life. The red and black main colors suggest blood and violence and a sense of oppression. The sky-blue color scheme seems to release that pressure, just as the game is addictive.
The picture on the right is more conceptual. I want to directly express the feeling of integration between reality and game through the picture. Red and black are also used as the main colors, while green is used to improve the overall contrast sense of the picture, so as to create a feeling of "future crime city". The inspiration for this work came from a photo I took casually on the street in the evening. This color is full of the feeling of the game picture and the image of the real world is full of fantasy and surreal feeling.
Alien chic compares the development of post-humanism to a simple change in human attitudes toward alien cultures. This shift in attitude, like gamification's shift in mindset, seems to have a lot in common. The gamification process and the development of post-humanism depend on the development of AI technology and other high technologies. This gives me the idea of combining gamification, post-humanism and high-tech to create works. Besides, I have greater ambition for my works than before. This time, I want to try more complex creations and larger picture scale.
So I created this set of images. By integrating game elements into the overall picture, we explore the possibilities of human and AI, flesh and machinery in the context of a gamified world view. In order to create a sense of gamification, I changed the style of my previous paintings and turned to illustrations and game posters. Besides, I used collage to integrate the future urban scenes in real films into my overall picture, so as to highlight the theme of the real and virtual world. You can see that the two sides of the picture are sharply opposed, representing the "new man" and the "old man" advocated by post-humanism. I drew them like a zombie game, not just to be gamified, but to put the theme in front of us: Are we evolving or are we degenerating?
The works of artist ian cheng are of great help to my creation. Through his gamified works, he expresses the resilience of human beings in the face of tough challenges, which is similar to the feeling I want to express.
Screen Printing
My first work was done on digital devices, but I was enlightened by the tutorial with paul, who told me that my work was suitable for screen printing. In addition to the previous screen printing introduction course, I also have some interest in screen printing, although I have not touched screen printing before, but this must be a good attempt.
Many problems were exposed in my first attempt. In terms of paper, I chose a rough paper at the beginning, which led to unsatisfactory printing effect. Then I tried to use a smooth paper and got a good result.
Ink adjustment also experienced several failures, and ink often after printing a version of dry screen, resulting in the failure to print a second edition.
As for the exploration of future works, I will continue to explore AI and people, gamification and post-humanism, and try to combine the three aspects to conduct multiple discussions. I will continue to explore new media forms. Laser engraving and riso printing are the new media I want to try in the future
